Established in 2019, the Autonomous State Medical College, Basti, also known as Maharshi Vashishtha Autonomous State Medical College, is a newer government institution in Uttar Pradesh. It is recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and is affiliated with the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University in Lucknow. Given its recent establishment, the college has not yet been featured in the national NIRF rankings, which is common for newer institutions still building their academic and research portfolio. The college focuses exclusively on undergraduate medical education, offering the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program with an annual intake of 100 students. Admission is highly competitive and is based on the NEET-UG examination score. Seats are allocated through counselling, with 85% reserved for the Uttar Pradesh state quota and the remaining 15% for the All India Quota. Being a government college, the fees are very affordable. For students aiming for admission in 2025 or 2026, the current annual fee is approximately ₹42,000, which includes tuition and hostel charges. For reference, the closing rank for the general category under the state quota in 2023 was around 16,339. Unlike engineering colleges, medical institutions do not have a campus placement system. After completing the 4.5-year MBBS course, graduates undergo a mandatory one-year paid rotatory internship, for which they receive a stipend. Therefore, specific placement statistics for the 2025 or 2026 graduating batches are not applicable. After their internship, doctors typically either prepare for postgraduate entrance exams like NEET-PG to pursue specialization or join government or private healthcare services as medical officers.
