Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) in Bellary is a well-regarded government medical college in Karnataka, established back in 1961. Affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), it has been a cornerstone of medical education in the region for decades. While specific NIRF rankings for 2025 are not yet released, VIMS maintains a strong reputation as a premier state-run institution. The institute's flagship program is the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). In addition to this, it offers a range of postgraduate options, including MD and MS degrees across various specialisations. Admission to the coveted MBBS seats is highly competitive and is based on the NEET-UG score. Seat allocation is managed through MCC counselling for the All India Quota and KEA counselling for the Karnataka state quota. Being a government college, the fee structure is quite affordable. For students securing a seat through the government quota for the 2025-26 academic year, the annual tuition fee is expected to be around ₹70,000, though this is subject to revision by the state authorities. Unlike engineering colleges, medical institutions don't have traditional placement drives. Upon completing their 4.5-year academic term, MBBS students undertake a compulsory one-year rotating internship at the large, multi-speciality VIMS hospital. This hands-on clinical training is crucial and comes with a monthly stipend. This intensive experience provides graduates with a solid foundation to either prepare for the NEET-PG entrance for further specialisation or to begin their careers as medical officers in various healthcare settings.
