Established in 1968, Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) is a prominent government medical institution located in Assam. As a key choice for medical aspirants in Northeast India, the college is affiliated with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences and is fully recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). While it doesn't frequently appear in the top 50 of the national NIRF rankings, its long-standing legacy, extensive hospital facilities, and experienced faculty ensure it provides a high standard of medical education. The primary course offered is the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), with admissions strictly based on NEET UG scores. Counselling for its 125 seats is managed by Assam's Directorate of Medical Education for the state quota and the MCC for the All India Quota. SMCH also offers various postgraduate courses like MD and MS. For the academic session beginning in 2025, the annual fee for the MBBS program is expected to be highly affordable, estimated at around INR 38,000, which is a significant advantage of studying in a government college. Upon completing their academic tenure, graduates undertake a mandatory one-year rotating internship, which offers crucial hands-on clinical experience in the large teaching hospital. Students beginning their internship in 2026 can expect to receive a monthly stipend of approximately INR 30,000. Following the internship, most doctors from SMCH either prepare for postgraduate entrance exams like NEET PG to pursue specialisation or begin their careers as medical officers in government or private healthcare setups.
