JSS Medical College and Hospital, once known as Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara University, is a private deemed-to-be university medical institution acknowledged in May 2008 under Section 3 of the UGC Act. Founded in 1984, it was initially linked with the University of Mysore until 1995 and then with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in Bangalore till 2008. Recognized by the National Medical Commission, WHO, and international entities like the UK's General Medical Council and the Sri Lanka Medical Council, it boasts an A+ NAAC accreditation and UGC's category-I deemed-university status. The associated JSS Hospital in Mysore, a large non-profit hospital with 1,800 beds accredited by NABH, serves as the main training ground for clinical education. In 2024, NIRF ranked the college 39th out of 50 colleges in India, and Outlook positioned it 4th among 228 colleges. IIRF ranked JSS 49th out of 113 Indian colleges, while Collegedunia placed it 377th out of 660 in 2025. The college offers a variety of courses in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, with MBBS being the flagship program. To enroll in MBBS, aspirants must clear the 10+2 examination with PCB subjects, maintaining a minimum of 50% marks. Admission is through NEET-UG, followed by counselling, with the first-year MBBS fee set at INR 19.86 Lakhs. As per the NIRF placement report of 2025, salary outcomes differ based on course duration. For 3-year UG courses, the median salary was INR 9.8 Lakhs. For 4-year UG courses, it was also INR 9.8 Lakhs, with 101 students placed. For 5-year UG courses, the median salary was INR 13.75 Lakhs with 175 placements. In PG, 2-year course graduates earned a median of INR 10.75 Lakhs, with 381 placements; for 3-year PG courses, it was INR 19.10 Lakhs, and 6-year PG program graduates earned INR 11.75 Lakhs.
